On June 10, Vermont Attorney General TJ Donovan announced his resignation as attorney general as of Monday, June 20 to become the director of public policy and U.S. state strategies for Roblox, an online gaming company. This announcement comes following Attorney General Donovan’s decision not to seek reelection after his two-year term ends in January 2023.

Chief Deputy Attorney General Joshua Diamond will serve as the acting attorney general unless Republican Vermont Governor Phil Scott fills the vacancy before the January 2023 election.

Donovan, a Democrat, was elected attorney general in 2016. During his term, Donovan prioritized data privacy, spearheading the nation’s first data broker legislation and leading multistate data privacy enforcement actions; implored Congress to establish a federal-state partnership to regulate cannabis; and enforced Vermont’s online sales ban of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS).
