On May 7, 2026, Ohio Attorney General (AG) Dave Yost announced his resignation after having served in the role since 2019.

Yost’s resignation is effective at midnight on June 7, 2026. Yost is vacating his position to join Alliance Defending Freedom as vice president of strategic research. Alliance Defending Freedom is a Christian organization that focuses on cultural and religious liberty issues.

An election for Ohio AG is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine will appoint someone to serve as Yost’s successor until the office is filled by the winner of that election. Yost was not running for reelection, having instead entered and then withdrawn from the race for governor.

During his tenure as AG, Yost made combating the opioid epidemic a top priority, launching the Scientific Committee on Opioid Prevention & Education (SCOPE) to drive science-based strategies for reducing substance use disorder. On the consumer protection front, he established a dedicated Robocall Enforcement Unit to investigate illegal robocall operations and pursue lawsuits and settlements against the companies that enabled them.

Beyond Ohio, Yost used his role as president of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) to champion veterans’ issues, unveiling the “Serving Those Who Serve” initiative to better support service members as they transition to civilian life through stronger partnerships with law enforcement and community organizations.

Yost sometimes stood apart when AGs from other states aligned with their political parties on national issues. When other Republican AGs sought to invalidate the Affordable Care Act, for example, Ohio — joined only by Montana — argued that even if the individual mandate were held unconstitutional, the rest of the law should be preserved in order to protect people with pre-existing conditions.

Key Update on May 11, 2026:

On May 11, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that he would appoint Andy Wilson to serve the remainder of Yost’s term. Wilson is a former prosecutor who previously advised the governor on criminal justice policy and currently serves in the governor’s cabinet as director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Because Wilson is not among the candidates running for AG in November’s election, he will serve as a caretaker for the position until the winner of that election takes office.
